In general, the Sanitation & Solid Waste Division is responsible for numerous essential services that protect public health, preserve the environment, and maintain community cleanliness. The Division ensures efficient and dependable waste collection and disposal, provides convenient services to residents and businesses, and promotes environmental stewardship through education and sustainable practices.
Objectives
The objective of the Sanitation & Solid Waste Division is to provide cost-effective, reliable, and environmentally responsible waste collection and disposal services for all residents and businesses in the City. The Division strives to ensure the proper disposal of solid waste materials, compliance with applicable ordinances and contracts, and the ongoing education of the community on responsible waste management practices.
Community Needs
Every community generates a wide range of waste disposal needs that are complex and evolving. The Sanitation & Solid Waste Division manages the collection of household garbage, bulk items, hazardous waste, and recyclables while ensuring compliance with environmental regulations. Although each household and business has unique needs, the Division continually works to streamline and standardize collection and disposal services across the City, while promoting sustainability and cost efficiency.
Duties & Responsibilities
The Sanitation & Solid Waste Division:
- Provides dependable curbside garbage collection twice per week for residents and businesses through private contractors
- Offers curbside bulk item collection twice monthly, ensuring large household items such as furniture, appliances, and yard debris are properly disposed of
- Coordinates quarterly hazardous waste drop-off events, offering safe and responsible disposal options for items such as chemicals, automotive fluids, paints, batteries, propane tanks, and electronic waste
- Oversees the collection of trash from public receptacles throughout the City
- Administers and monitors solid waste collection service agreements between the City and private haulers to ensure compliance, accountability, and high-quality service delivery
- Resolves service-related complaints in a timely and professional manner to maintain community satisfaction and trust
- Develops and enforces ordinances and policies that foster environmental protection and ensure proper waste handling and disposal
- Promotes public awareness by educating residents and businesses on proper waste disposal practices, recycling options, and hazardous material safety
- Acts as a consultant and guide to the community, providing expertise on waste management issues and navigating regulatory and contractual requirements
