Captain Richard Barnes has proudly served the City of Pembroke Pines since graduating from the 214th session of the Broward County Police Academy in 2003. Prior to attending the police academy Captain Barnes attended the Pembroke Pines Citizens Police Academy and went on to become a Pembroke Pines Police Explorer.
Captain Barnes served as a Patrol Officer, Field Training Officer, Gang Task Force, Crime Suppression Team and Crisis Response Team member prior to his appointment to Training Officer in 2013. While serving in the Training Unit, Captain Barnes became an instructor in the areas of Defensive Tactics, Firearms, Vehicle Operations and Active Shooter.
Captain Barnes was promoted to the rank of Sergeant in 2016. During his time as a Sergeant he served in the Patrol Division and Training Unit. He was subsequently promoted to the rank of Captain in 2021.
Captain Barnes’ experience includes being a prior Corrections Deputy for Broward Sheriff’s Office and a current adjunct instructor at the Broward County Police Academy. Captain Barnes has received numerous commendations and awards during his tenure including a lifesaving award in 2005.
Captain Barnes is currently assigned as the Youth Affairs Division supervisor.
