2019 Pembroke Pines Memorial Day Observance Ceremony

Pembroke Pines, FL (May 7, 2019) –  Please join the City of Pembroke Pines in honoring United States Veterans, both living and deceased, during the Memorial Day Observance Ceremony on Monday, May 27, 2019 from 9:00 a.m. -11:00 a.m. at Donnith H. Fletcher Park located at 7900 Johnson Street in Pembroke Pines.  The event is free and everyone is welcome to attend.  The observance includes the Presentation of Colors by the Pembroke Pines Police and Fire Honor Guard.  Additionally, community leaders and guest speakers will come together to pay tribute and take part in a wreath placing ceremony.

On June 30, 1970, at the conclusion of the Vietnam War, Donnith H. Fletcher and seven other soldiers were aboard helicopters that were shot down. They were among the 58,000 Americans who lost their lives in the 11 years of the U.S involvement.  Fletcher received a posthumous Purple Heart.  In 1971, City officials dedicated Donnith H. Fletcher Memorial Park in memory of the first resident of Pembroke Pines to perish in the Vietnam War.

Memorial Day is a special day set aside to honor and remember all men and women who have died while serving in the United States Armed Forces. Originally called Decoration Day, Memorial Day was officially declared a National holiday on May 5, 1868 by General John Logan, National Commander of the Grand Army of the Republic.  It was first observed on May 30, 1868 when flowers were placed on the graves of Union and Confederate soldiers at Arlington National Cemetery. The Day is now honored every year on the last Monday of May.
