Art

Pembroke Pines, FL (May 1, 2019) - The Carl Shechter Southwest Focal Point Community Center Campus, located at 301 NW 103 Ave., in Pembroke Pines will be celebrating Older Americans Month throughout the month of May with a variety of special programs, games, activities, events and classes.

Every May, the nation commemorates Older Americans Month to identify older Americans for their contributions, and provide an opportunity to celebrate what getting older looks like today.  The Administration for Community Living leads our nation’s observance of Older American’s Month.  This year’s theme is “Connect, Create, Contribute,” which encourages older adults and their communities to: Connect with family, friends and services that support participation; Create by engaging in activities that promote health and personal improvement; and Contribute time and life experience to benefit others.

Week One at the Center will concentrate on “Connect, Create and Contribute” and will feature free classes that include Salsa, Zumba and a Silver Sneakers class, games and a raffle drawing for activities participants.  Week Two will focus on “Connect with Family and Friends” and include a “Puppy Corner,” a Mother’s Day Celebration Breakfast, social meetups and additional classes, games and competitions.  Week Three will have an emphasis on “Learning, Health and Personal Enrichment” and will include an annual spelling bee, flea market, raffle drawings, karaoke, creating jewelry and trips.  The focal point of Week Four will be “Contribute Time, Talent and Life Experience” and will include a talent show, dinner dance, activities and raffles.  Lastly, Week 5, which goes through May 31, 2019, will center on “Everyone Benefits when Everyone Participates” and will include a closing celebration with cake, entertainment, classes, games, activities and more.

A listing of all the activities and events for Older Americans Month will be available in May at the Activities Desk in the Center.
