Pembroke Pines, FL (April 24, 2019) – Checkmate! Pembroke Pines Mayor Frank C. Ortis welcomes boys and girls of all ages, experienced or new to the game of chess, to test their wits and join him at the 4th annual Mayor’s Chess Challenge. The free event, which supports scholastic chess, takes place on Saturday, May 18, 2019 from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at the Pembroke Lakes Golf Club Nineteen Restaurant, located at 10500 Taft Street in Pembroke Pines.
This is the final chess challenge being held throughout Broward County as part of a friendly series of chess meet-ups and competition in 19 different cities created to bring notoriety to the benefits of chess in both the academic environment and in the local community. Chess players are invited to show their skills and play the game with Mayor Frank C. Ortis, City Commissioners, Broward County officials, community leaders and others at this monthly traveling contest. Players have the opportunity to win giveaways, raffle prizes and enjoy refreshments while competing. Lastly, Instructors will be on hand to assist those new to the game.
The Mayor’s Chess Challenge is a First Move event, sponsored by the nonprofit Americas Foundation 4 Chess www.af4c.org. Internationally, the America’s Foundation 4 Chess First Move program can be found in Scotland, England, Kenya, St Lucia, Antigua, Suriname and 26 States in the U.S. where approximately 140,000 students participate in the program.
