The City of Pembroke Pines Crossed the Finish Line
For the 21st Annual Relay for Life
(Jpgs are available to media)

Pembroke Pines, FL (April 8, 2019) – Thousands of Pembroke Pines residents, friends, guests and cancer survivors were in attendance for the 21st Annual Relay for Life.  The 15 hour event got underway at 6:00 p.m. on April 5, 2019 and went until 9:00 a.m. on Saturday, April 6, 2019 at the Walter C. Young Middle School track, located at 901 NW 129th Avenue, in Pembroke Pines. The Relay for Life of Pembroke Pines was a rousing, team-based, overnight walking event that brought the community together to celebrate the lives of those who have fought cancer, remembered the loved ones lost, and empowered communities to fight back by finding a cure for the disease.

The event included a Survivors Lap where all cancer survivors took the initial lap around the track to celebrate their triumph over cancer; a Caregivers Lap where caregivers were honored as they walked a lap, usually with the person they supported; and a Luminaria Ceremony which took place after dark to honor those who had lost their lives to cancer, to remember those who fought cancer in the past, and to support those who continued their fight.  Candles were also lit inside of custom-made personalized bags that were placed around the track as shining recognition to those affected by the disease.
When not running or walking around the track, contestants visited team campsites, took part in games, activities, enjoyed food varieties and entertainment, such as the Locks of Love Ceremony, and bounce houses for the kids.  And, with a cheering crowd, the Pembroke Pines Fire Rescue Department won against the Pembroke Pines Police Department 1-0 in a Relay for Life Kickball Game.
