Pembroke Pines, FL ( August 14, 2018) – The deadline to enter is fast approaching so if you have what it takes to be the next “Spelling Bee” winner, then join us for the Seventh Annual Senior Spanish Spelling BEE held in recognition of National Hispanic Heritage Month. The competition will take place on Tuesday, September 11, 2018, from 12:30 p.m. to 2 p.m. in the Main Hall of the Carl Shechter Southwest Focal Point Community Center, located at 301 NW 103 Avenue in Pembroke Pines.
Prizes are awarded to the winner and both second and third place finishers. Those interested in participating in the 2018 spelling bee must be at least 60 years of age and should sign up at the Center’s Activities Desk prior to the deadline of September 7, 2018. The event is free for Center members, and a SWFP Membership Card is required to take part.
National Hispanic Heritage Month takes place September 15 to October 15 to celebrate the contributions of American citizens whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean, Central American and South America. The observance began in 1968 as Hispanic Heritage Week under President Lyndon B. Johnson, and was expanded by President Ronald Reagan on September 13, 1988 to cover a 30-day period. It was enacted into law on August 17, 1988.
