Pembroke Pines, FL (April 23, 2018) -- The Carl Shechter Southwest Focal Point Community Center Campus, located at 301 NW 103 Ave., will be celebrating Older Americans Month throughout the month of May with a variety of special programs, games, drawings, classes and events.
Every May, the nation commemorates Older Americans Month to recognize older Americans for their contributions, and provide an opportunity to celebrate what getting older looks like today. The 2018 theme, ENGAGE AT EVERY AGE, emphasizes that you are never too old to be involved in activities that can enhance your intellectual, physical and psychological well-being.
“The contributions that older adults make to our communities is priceless,” said Jay Shechter, Director of Community Services. “We celebrate and support our older citizens every day here at the Center. We’re very proud to acknowledge all that they do not only throughout the month of May, but every day in every month.”
Week One at the Center will focus on “Striving for Physical Wellness” and will feature free classes that include Salsa, Zumba and a Silver Sneakers class, games and a raffle drawing. The opening of the Student Art Display will also begin on May 1, 2018. Week Two will focus on “Achieving Mental and Emotional Well Being” and include a “Puppy Corner,” a Mother’s Day Celebration Breakfast and more classes, games and contests. Week Three will focus on “Sharing Wisdom and Knowledge with the Next Generation” and will include an annual spelling bee, games and lunch with students, karaoke and trips. Week Four through May 31st will focus on “Enriching Our Lives with Mentors” and “Engage at Every Age.” There will be a closing celebration with cake, entertainment and classes and activities will continue.
A listing of all the activities and events for Older Americans Month will be available in May at the Activities Desk in the Center.
