Pembroke Pines, FL….October 11, 2017….Participants 60 years and older enjoyed friendly competition during the Sixth Annual Spanish Spelling Bee held at The Carl Shechter Southwest Focal Point Community Center Campus, 301 NW 103 Avenue in Pembroke Pines.
 
This year’s winner Mariam Martinez won First Place by spelling the word Barbitúrico correctly (Translation - Barbiturate). The Second and Third places and prizes were awarded to Emilia Goenaga and Julio Garzon.  First place winner received a certificate of recognition and a cash prize of $50.  The Second place winner received $30, and the Third Place received $20. “This year we had a visit from one year old Ezra Wolfson who wore a Bumble Bee costume to the contest and was crowned Spelling Bee Mascot!,” said Suzy Felix, Activities Coordinator.  “This year’s Spanish Spelling Bee Moderator was Martha Castilleja (Ezra’s grandmother) who was assisted by Fernanda Wolfson (Ezra’s mother).
