Originally called Decoration Day, Memorial Day was officially declared a National holiday on May 5, 1868 by General John Logan, National Commander of the Grand Army of the Republic. It was first observed on May 30, 1868 when flowers were placed on the graves of Union and Confederate soldiers at Arlington National Cemetery. The Day is now honored every year on the last Monday of May.
The Donnith H. Fletcher Park in Pembroke Pines was named after Fletcher who was the first Pembroke Pines casualty in the Vietnam War. On June 30, 1970, at the close of the Vietnam War, Fletcher and seven other soldiers were aboard helicopters which were shot down. Fletcher received a posthumous Purple Heart. In 1971, the City named the ball fields and park near Johnson Street and University Drive after Fletcher in his memory.
