Pembroke Pines, FL (March 22, 2022) – Checkmate! The Mayor’s Chess Challenge is back! Pembroke Pines Mayor Frank C. Ortis welcomes all ages, experienced or new to the game of chess, to test their wits and join him at the Mayor’s Chess Challenge. The free event takes place on Saturday, May 14, 2022 from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at the Pembroke Lakes Golf Club Nineteen Restaurant, located at 10500 Taft Street in Pembroke Pines.
This is the final chess challenge being held throughout Broward County as part of a friendly series of chess meet-ups and competition in 20 different cities created to bring notoriety to the benefits of chess in both the academic environment and in the local community. Chess players are invited to showcase their skills and play the game with Mayor Frank C. Ortis, City Commissioners, Broward County officials, community leaders and others at this monthly traveling competition. Players have the opportunity to win giveaways, raffle prizes and enjoy refreshments while competing. Lastly, Instructors will be on hand to assist those new to the game.
The chess challenges support Scholastic Chess, which has been steadily emerging throughout the years. Players at this particular Challenge will have their Mayor’s Chess Challenge Passport stamped so they can log their participation. Those with perfect attendance from all the challenges will receive a prize at the end of the season. More than 100 boys and girls of all ages have attended the Mayor’s Chess Challenge in Pembroke Pines in previous years.
The Mayor’s Chess Challenge is a First Move event, sponsored by the nonprofit Americas Foundation 4 Chess www.af4c.org. Internationally, the America’s Foundation 4 Chess First Move program can be found in Scotland, England, Kenya, St Lucia, Antigua, Suriname and 26 States in the U.S. where approximately 140,000 students take part in the program.
