Pembroke Pines, FL ( January 5, 2022) - Please join The City of Pembroke Pines for a Martin Luther King Jr Ceremony at the Charles F. Dodge City Center, located at 601 City Center Way in Pembroke Pines on Monday, January 17, 2022 from 10:00 a.m. until noon. Gathering in celebration, all will enjoy a morning filled with speeches from city officials, poetry and performances from recording artist Mr. Sherman Woods and The Woods Gospel Band in tribute of a man who had a dream. The event is free and all ages are cordially invited to attend.
Additionally, The City of Pembroke Pines invites students either attending school or residing in Pembroke Pines to respond to a call for original poetry, spoken word or creative writing pieces. One entry per student. Submissions, which are currently being accepted through this Friday, January 7, 2022, must be emailed to thefrank@ppines.com. All entries must be original writing containing no less than 15 words and no more than 300 words. For further guidelines, please visit www.thefrankgallery.org/p/poetrycontest. One winner will be selected from each grade level category: Kindergarten-2nd grade; 3rd -5th grade; 6th -8th grade; and 9th -12th grade. On Monday, January 17, 2022 the winners from each grade level category will read their submissions and will be presented with a gift card during the city’s Martin Luther King Jr. celebration.
Each year, on the third Monday of January, a federal holiday is held to honor and mark the birthday of civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. who was assassinated in Memphis, TN on April 4, 1968. President Ronald Reagan signed the holiday into law in 1983. It was first observed three years later, but officially observed in all 50 states for the first time in 2000. Dr. King was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964.
Lastly, the City of Pembroke Pines encourages the wearing of face coverings and social distancing to fight the Covid-19 pandemic.
