Parenting in the COVID-19 Age:
The Importance of Self Care
Pembroke Pines, FL (February 22, 2021) - As part of the City of Pembroke Pines award winning series Raising Positive Children, students, parents, grandparents/guardians, educators and youth advocates are invited to virtually experience a very special forum addressing “Parenting in the COVID-19 Age: The Importance of Self Care” on Wednesday, March 10, 2021 at 6:30 p.m. “live” via the city’s YouTube Channel (Pembroke Pines Media).
The special guest speakers will be Dr. Scott Poland, a Professor at the College of Psychology and the Director of the Suicide and Violence Prevention Office at Nova Southeastern University in Fort Lauderdale, and Dr. Elizabeth Hilsman, a Licensed Psychologist (Psy.D.) in private practice and an Adjunct Faculty Clinical Supervisor in the School-Related Psychological Assessments and Clinical Interventions (SPACI) clinic at Nova Southeastern University. They will help empower parents by directly addressing the many and new emotions arising from the pandemic, and will outline the importance of self-care for adults and how to model coping skills for their children. They will also discuss the importance of parental presence in their children’s lives and in modeling optimism and hope for the future.
“In these very challenging times, children and teens are experiencing extraordinary stressors and may struggle with isolation, depression and anxiety due to this pandemic,” said Pembroke Pines Commissioner Iris A. Siple. “Parents today need added support, and both children and parents need a self-care plan to manage all of this stress. That’s why we felt it important to once again share with our community at this time such critical information and ideas to help.”
This is the seventh in a series of presentations hosted by Pembroke Pines Vice Mayor Iris A. Siple, West Campus Charter School Principal Michael Castellano, the Education Roundtable Forum and the City of Pembroke Pines to call attention to and find solutions for the many issues parents and children face today at home and at school.
While this presentation is appropriate for all ages, parents should use their own judgment in determining the suitability of the topic/discussion for their children.
