[ARCHIVED] Mayor's Chess Challenge

MayorChessChallenge

The best is saved for last at the Mayor’s Third Annual Chess Challenge being held on Saturday, May 18, 2019 from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. at the Pembroke Lakes Golf Club 19 Restaurant, located at 10500 Taft Street. This is the last chess challenge being held throughout Broward County as part of a free and friendly series of chess meet-ups in 19 different cities created to draw attention to the benefits of chess in both the academic environment and in our community. Chess players of all ages and skills are welcome to play chess with Mayor Frank C. Ortis, City Commissioners, Broward County officials, community leaders and other players at this monthly traveling challenge. Instructors are on hand to help those new to the game.

The chess challenges support Scholastic Chess, which has been steadily growing throughout the years.  Players at this Challenge will have their Mayor’s Chess Challenge Passport stamped so they can log their participation. Those with perfect attendance from all the challenges will receive a prize at the end of the season. More than 100 boys and girls of all ages have attended the Mayor’s Chess Challenge in Pembroke Pines in previous years. The Mayor’s Chess Challenge is a First Move event, sponsored by the nonprofit Americas Foundation 4 Chess www.af4c.org . Internationally, the America’s Foundation 4 Chess First Move program can be found in Scotland, England, Kenya, St Lucia, Antigua, Suriname and 26 States in the U.S. where approximately 140,000 students participate in the program.
