The first two-day National Wheelchair Basketball Association Sanctioned Tournament (NWBA) at the 35th Annual DisAbilities Expo on October 11-12 at Nova Southeastern University is being coordinated by Mary Palacios, The City of Pembroke Pines Special Population Coordinator and Expo Board Member and Adapted Sports Chair. Several wheelchair basketball players began with the City of Pembroke Pines Wheelchair Basket Recreational Program now in its twelfth year and several of those players are now participating on two locally sanctioned teams, the Ft. Lauderdale Sharks and the Sunrise Suns. Admission to the Expo and tournament is free and includes the opportunity to watch and cheer on six statewide teams, featured at the Expo. On Saturday October 11, more than 80 nonprofit and governmental agencies and businesses will be at the Expo to provide information to individuals with disabilities and their friends and family members. Participants will also enjoy exhibitor booths, educational seminars, children’s activities, the Inspiration Runway Fashion Show, and an art exhibit by artists with disabilities. The DisAbility Expo is being held on Saturday from 10:00 AM-4:00 PM. The WC basketball Tournament is being held on Saturday, October 11, 2014 from 9:00 AM- 5:30 PM, and on Sunday, October 12, from 11:00 AM - 3:30 PM. The six teams that are participating are the Ft. Lauderdale Sharks, Sunrise Suns, Orlando Magic Wheels, Tampa Bay Strong Dogs, Miami Heat Wheels, and the Brooks Ballers (the Jacksonville Team). The public is invited to stop by the City of Pembroke Pines resource table on Saturday to pick up information about the Special Population Program and to cheer on the teams on Saturday and Sunday.
