[ARCHIVED] Juneteenth

Juneteenth

City Hall will be closed on Wednesday, June 19, 2024 in honor of Juneteenth. The City of Pembroke Pines has an ordinance that makes Juneteenth an official City holiday.  Juneteenth marks June 19, 1865 as the date enslaved individuals in Galveston, TX learned they were free more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was signed by President Abraham Lincoln on January 1, 1863.  As part of the City of Pembroke Pines Code of Ordinances, Juneteenth is a day of celebration in the city and a paid city holiday. There will be a Family Day Celebrates: Juneteenth! with a reading of “A Flag for Juneteenth” by Kim Taylor at The Frank C. Ortis Art Gallery, located at 601 City Center Way. After the reading, participants are encouraged to work together as a family to create a unique paper quilted flag, as well as enjoy free entry to The Frank’s summer exhibition.  There will be light refreshments and snacks.  This event will be held on Saturday, June 15, from 1 am to 1 pm. This is a free celebration, and all materials will be provided.  According to Juneteenth.com, Juneteenth is the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the ending of slavery in the United States.  For more information, please visit www.juneteenth.com
