Independence Day (Fourth of July) has been a federal holiday in the United States since 1941.  The tradition of Independence Day celebrations dates back to the 18th century and the American Revolution, recognizing the birth of American Independence. Some interesting facts: The Liberty Bell in Philadelphia is tapped 13 times every July 4th in honor of the original 13 colonies; John Adams and Thomas Jefferson, two signers of the Declaration of Independence, both died on July 4, 1826; and Americans spend more than $1 billion on fireworks annually.
