  1. 1939: Hollywood’s Golden Year History of Film Lecture

    History of Film Lecture by Dr. Andrew Strycharski, 7/19/18 6:30 pm 1939 is remembered as “Hollywood’s Golden Year,” with such films as Stagecoach, Gone with the Wind, and The Wizard of Oz among the many memorable films released that year. In this lecture, Dr. Andrew Strycharski will discuss the ways in which The Wizard of Oz created an immersive experience for viewers that was unlike anything they had experienced before—one that remains powerful to this day. Dr. Andrew Strycharski directs the film studies program at Florida International University, where he teaches courses in film history, new media, and renaissance literature. You can find him around town leading film lectures at the Coral Gables Art Cinema and the Miami Jewish Film Festival. His interest in Shakespeare on film has led to research funding from the American Philosophical Association, the Folger Institute, and the Folger Shakespeare Library. This event is free to the public. Refreshments will be served.

    Learn to draw beloved Wizard of Oz™ characters in this fun-filled cartoon drawing class led by Angel Alvarez! Discover the traditional foundations of cartooning and drawing, from constructing characters, line of action, understanding proper proportion, and designing appealing characters. With an instinct for humorous character development, Angel Alvarez attained his Master of Fine Arts in Illustration from the University of Hartford. Angel teaches digital art and animation at North Broward Preparatory School, and he teaches cartoon drawing at the De Vita Academy of Art. In 2017, he created Cartoon Drawing Studio –a suite of online drawing classes- in order to share his passion for drawing cartoon characters with others. This event is free to the public. All materials provided. No prior experience required. Ages: 12yrs+

  3. Frank Contemporaries Pop-Up Exhibition & Emerging Arts Professional Meet Up

    Frank Contemporaries is a monthly pop-up exhibition showcasing emerging artists; an event that offers artists, arts professionals and industry insiders the opportunity to present their work, discover new peers and supporters, and foster professional connections. From artists, art enthusiasts and students, to those who work in galleries, performance venues, schools or museums, all are welcome. Frank Contemporaries on July 26 will feature new work and artist talks by mixed media artist April Saler (professor of art at Broward College) and mixed-media artist Gianna DiBartolomeo (MFA candidate at Florida international University). This event will include a presentation by guest speaker Joseph Miller, General Manager of C&I Studios: a multipurpose media company and event space that hosts themed art walk parties, movie nights, free music concerts, and much more. This event is free to the public. Complimentary refreshments and hors d’oeuvres will be served.
