Commissioner Carl Shechter
District 1
Originally from New York, Commissioner Carl Shechter has made Pembroke Pines his home in every sense of the word. Very involved in the community, he was first appointed interim Commissioner from May 2004 to August 2004. He was then elected to a four-year term beginning in 2006, and then re-elected in 2010 and in 2014. He served four terms as Vice Mayor.

“I love to partner with the people of my District and the City,” said Commissioner Shechter. “District 1 is where it all began, the birthplace of our City, and it’s been very exciting watching it grow and evolve. I’m honored to serve, and together we will create an even greater City.”

Commissioner Shechter has held numerous board and committee positions including: being a Board Member of the Broward League of Cities, a member of the Florida League of Cities Municipal Service Delivery Council, on the Board of Directors of the Broward Regional Health Planning Council, and a member of the Information Technology and Communications Steering Committee of the National League of Cities.

He was Vice Chairman of the Broward County Ethics Commission and serves on the Board of Directors of Douglas Gardens Senior Housing, Inc.

He did his pre-law studies at the City College of the City of New York, and earned his law degree from St. John’s Law School. Commissioner Shechter, a WWII veteran, served 14 months in the U.S. Army. He practiced law in New York before moving to South Florida and becoming active in his community; serving as Vice President and then President of Hollybrook Golf & Tennis Condo in Pembroke Pines. He was a member of the City’s Planning and Zoning Board for 10 years, serving as chairman for the last five years.

Commissioner Shechter is married with four grown children and seven grandchildren.
