The Recreation and Cultural Arts Department will be hosting the Mayor’s Play Ball Summer event in conjunction with the United State Conference of Mayors (USCM) and Major League Baseball on Friday, June 22, 2018 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Flamingo Park. This free event, which promotes youth baseball and softball, will feature fun activities, music and food.
There will be a Pitch, Hit, Run Competition with separate age divisions, as well as divisions for Beginners and Advanced players. Boys and girls ages 7 to 14 will be given the option of using baseball or softball equipment.
On June 20, 2015, Major League Baseball and the USCM launched a new Play Ball initiative, that focused on the sport of baseball and encouraged sustained participation in the sport for years to come. Play Ball serves as a platform to connect with those who are currently involved in the game, while also providing alternative ways for those looking to get involved, with a specific focus on youth participation.

Frank Contemporaries is a monthly pop-up exhibition showcasing emerging artists; an event that offers artists, arts professionals and industry insiders the opportunity to present their work, discover new peers and supporters, and foster professional connections. From artists, art enthusiasts and students, to those who work in galleries, performance venues, schools or museums, all are welcome. Frank Contemporaries on June 28 will feature new work and artist talks by sculptor Ian Fichman (resident artist at Bakehouse Art Complex) and painter Stephanie Hibbard (MFA candidate at Florida international University). This event is free to the public. Complimentary refreshments and hors d’oeuvres will be served.

This free filmmaking workshop offers participants an inside look at the tricks and tools of filmmakers who must tell their story through your eyes. After analyzing and breaking down an actual film scene, participants will then collaborate to shoot their own version.
Nerissa Street is an award-winning arts educator and storyteller. She has presented the transformative power of storytelling to audiences including South by Southwest®, TEDx, Images and Voices of Hope, and the Women's Media Center. Her organization, Girls Call The Shots, works with teen girls to develop their voices in film and media through professional mentorship and production experience.
This event is free to the public. Materials: Participants must bring their own smartphone. No prior experience required. Ages: 12yrs+
